Mergent Online: Database Tutorial

Help and Database Link

The Advanced Search finds company information and allows you to build a search using specific textual and financial criteria.

Build Search Criteria

  1. Select the Advanced Search tab.
  2. Under Select Target Universe, check the boxes of the company databases to search.
  3. Once you have selected the databases to search, Select Data Categories by choosing one of the tab options. You can choose search criteria from any of the eight different categories of information:
    • Corporate Information
    • Executives
    • Financials
    • Industry Codes
    • Pricing
    • Ratios
    • Textual Search
    • Index
  4. After you choose a category of information, select a data point by clicking the (+) icon next to it. The data point will appear in a row below the options box along with more specific options.
    • If you have clicked a data point incorrectly, simply click on the X on the left of the criteria box.
    • You can add further data point specifications to narrow your search.
  5. After you choose a data point, click >> submit and it will generate the number of result matches. As you add multiple data points this number will get smaller.
    • Note: The matches number may take some time to populate. If it takes a while, you can click View to see the results before the number generates.
  6. At the end of the row it shows a drop down menu with the options AND or OR. Choosing AND will require results to contain both that data point and any others you've selected. Choosing OR will search for either of the points. (AND = fewer results, OR = more results)
  7. When you are ready to see the results, click View.

The Executive Search lets you search for current and former company executives.

Build Search Criteria

  1. Select the Executive Search tab.
  2. Under Select Target Universe, check the boxes of the company databases to search.
    • Note: The two available databases are Active US and Active International Companies.
  3. Once you have selected the databases to search, Select Data Categories by choosing one of the tab options. You can choose search criteria from any of the eight different categories of information:
    • Corporate Information
    • Executives
    • Financials
    • Industry Codes

Using Search Results

Once you do a Basic, Advanced, or Executive Search, the results page will show the companies' name, SIC code, exchange, ticker, activity status, country, and sector.

  • Search Within Results - Use the text box at the top right of the results screen to search your results for a specific Company Name, Ticker Symbol, Exchange, or CUSIP.
  • Download - At the top right of each page is a link to download the results list data into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
  • My Mergent Tools - At the right of each results page are "My Mergent Tools." These enable you to add the companies to your Company Analysis List or add executives to your Executive List. You can also set up Company and Executive Alerts to tell you when there are changes to the company or executive.
    • Company Analysis List - To add a company to your Company Analysis List, click the check boxes next to the companies you wish to add and select Add Company from the drop down list at the top left of the page (above the search tabs). To add all companies in the results list, click All, then select Add Company.
    • Executive List - To add an executive to your Executives List, click the check boxes next to the executive and select Add Executive from the drop down list at the top left of the page (above the search tabs). To add all executives in the results list, click All, then select Add Executive.
