"In 2022–2023, the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis, in collaboration with the U.S. Census Bureau, surveyed registered nurses in the United States. Nearly 50,000 registered nurses provided data. We compiled the results, produced several reports on the data, and updated an easy-to-use dashboard to display the latest information."

Since 1977, HRSA’s Bureau of Health workforce has conducted the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN). The data from these periodic surveys provide the basis for estimating the characteristics of the nurse workforce, evaluating trends, and projecting the future supply of nursing resources. In 2022 and 2018, the NSSRN included a representative sample of Nurse Practitioners.

The National Center for Health Workforce Analysis (NCHWA) helps public and private organizations understand how changes in population will affect future workforce demands. In November 2024, NCHWA released projections for 2022-2037. This page provides summary information on those projections.
