Images from Books, Articles, and Databases
If the image originated in a book, journal article, or in a database entry, provide the citation details for the source. Then cite the image same way you would cite a direct quote.
Images Online
If the image was found online, cite the same way you would for a website.
Example: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Slide 39 – Chrome hole, nasal. Image. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Updated January 5, 1998. Accessed February 1, 2022. https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/skin/occderm-slides/ocderm8.html
- If credit for the image is provided, use this as the author. If this is unclear, use the creators/authors of the website if you believe they created the image. If it’s unclear who is responsible for the image, omit the authors and begin with the title of the image.
- If the image lacks a title, provide a brief description (e.g.: Photograph of patient receiving vaccine).
- If the website author and the website name are identical, cite as if it has no author and begin with the title of the page.
- For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is both the website title and the name of the organization responsible for the information on that site.
